Interview with Faye Thomson, a glass engraver, continued.

How much does your surrounding environment influence your work? For example animals and birds appear to be a recurring theme.

I do like nature (from a distance) but the birds and animal themes came about because my clients were always looking for Australian subjects to take overseas. I do figures as well.

If you had to choose a favourite piece you have made what would it be?

The piece that works! Each piece is special..it is a very intimate experience...but when it works out the way you planned originally..

What has been the most difficult aspect of your craft for you to learn?

The most difficult aspect of engraving is patience.

What was the most difficult piece you have created and why?

The very first "Rainforest" piece that I engraved. It was physically demanding

Flocking to the Nectar

What do you find most pleasing about glass engraving?

I enjoy seeing the animals appear to have 'life'

Do you have any advice for someone that might be interested in starting glass engraving?

You must be able to draw well

What other interests do you have (besides glass engraving)?

I enjoy collecting ancient Chinese Art and Japanese woodblocks and netsukes. Poking around antique shops and fairs is fun.

It is said that craftwork is therapeutic. Have you ever you used your craft to get through a difficult time?

I find in 'difficult' times you tend to get a creative block

Is there something that you do differently to other glass engravers?

I am an intaglio engraver. Each piece is carved deep into the glass to have the appearance of a miniature sculptural relief, then polished.

What kind of workspace do you have?

My workspace is my kitchen sink. For 26 years I have engraved thousands of pieces at the sink.

A Favourite Place

If you would change it, what would you do?

I would prefer a studio, on acres, next to a country house!
