Felted Blue Chair, 2008.
Felted Blue Chair, 2008.

Interview continued with Adelle, an artist who transforms old chairs into funky sculptures.

What are some of the tools and materials that you used on your latest chair?

I would die without my staple gun and hammer. On my latest chair I used weather proof fabric that comes in all shades, colours and patterns. So I can now have outdoors, the beautiful fabric that we are used to only being able to have indoors.

What is your favourite material or technique you have used on a chair?

My favourite technique is the felted seats that I reupholstered some chairs in. It was difficult but I really love the result.

Can you outline the general process behind the work you did on your latest chair?

My latest chair was one that I saved from hard rubbish. It was totally old and weathered and missing an arm. I stripped back all the old varnish and gave it an undercoat of weather proof paint. I then gave it another 2 coats of top finish paint and brushed over some gold paint to give it a ‘stylish’ old weathered look as opposed to the ‘ugly’ old weathered look it had in the beginning. I re-padded the seat and re-upholstered it in weather proof zebra print fabric.

Where is your favourite place to look for a new chair to turn into a sculpture?

Where do you sell your work?

Through my website, ebay, etsy and word of mouth.
